DiJa – I asked myself this same question six years ago when I took my first trip to Paris. Since then, I have visited twice each year, and have never had a problem. Unlike some other major metropolitan cities, you will not run into violent crime in Paris. No one is going to mug you or rob you at knife or gun point. Now that being said, it is true that where there are tourists, there will be people trying to take advantage of them. Pickpockets are the most common. But it’s important to remember that when I say common, I don’t mean they are at every corner, just that of all the types of crime, that is probably the one tourists need to be vigilant about. Just be aware when you are in large crowds. Keep your money, id and other important things in a zippered or inside buttoned pocket. When we go out, I never bring a wallet. Instead, I simply keep a small amount of cash, one credit card and my US driver’s license in my front pocket. Always leave your Passport and additional credit cards and cash in the hotel room safe or safety deposit box if they have one. Also, we have never had a problem walking around the city at night either – in fact it is quite beautiful with the illuminated sites. Stick to the main districts – 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th 7th & 8th, and you will be fine. Paris is, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful city in the world, and certainly one of the safest. Enjoy it to the fullest, and take a few simple precautions, and you will have the time of your life.
